The browser enforces this: the site’s security policy only lets the page talk to the code libraries’ servers and an anonymous usage counter (tool name, file type, size range). A request carrying your file to anywhere else would be blocked before it left.
Check it yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and run the tool. Or turn off Wi-Fi once the tool has loaded; it keeps working.
How it works
UPSC wants a photo of 20 to 200 KB where your face covers at least 75% of it, and a triple signature of 20 to 100 KB, 350 to 500 pixels wide and high.
The UPSC portal checks your photo automatically: your face must cover at least 75% of the frame, on a white background, with both ears visible and eyes open, without dark glasses, uniform, shadows or glare, and the photo must not be signed. It must be a JPG between 20 KB and 200 KB, named photo. The signature is a triple signature: sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on plain white unruled paper, and upload it as one JPG of 20 to 100 KB whose width and height are each between 350 and 500 pixels, named signature. UPSC also takes a live photo by webcam in the form and matches it to the uploaded one, so use a recent photo. The face guide here is sized for the 75% rule, the triple signature is cleaned and framed at 480 × 450 pixels, and the files download already named photo.jpg and signature.jpg.
How to use it
- Pick UPSC. The sizes it asks for load with a link to the official notice.
- Add each image. A phone photo is fine: drag and zoom inside the exact frame.
- Check the list. Format, pixels and KB are checked the way the portal checks them.
- Download. One file per upload, already named and sized.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the UPSC photo size?
- JPG, 20 to 200 KB, with your face covering at least 75% of the photo, on a white background.
- What is a triple signature?
- Your signature written three times, one below the other, on one sheet, uploaded as a single image of 350–500 pixels each way and 20–100 KB.
- Do I need to write my name and date on the UPSC photo?
- Not any more. The 2026 instructions only ask for a recent photo.
- Why does the portal still reject my file?
- Check you picked the right exam, and that the file you upload is the one downloaded here, not a screenshot or a copy re-saved by another app. Notices change between cycles, so compare with the official link shown on the page.
- Are my photo and signature uploaded?
- No. They are cropped, cleaned and compressed in your browser, on your device. Location and camera details are removed from the saved files.
